Prerana Kids Courtyard (PKC)

At Prerana Kids Courtyard (PKC) we believe in Learning by doing - a child needs to 'touch', 'explore', 'learn' and 'enjoy' to understand the world around her/him. In order to stimulate a child's imagination, we provide opportunities for the child to grow and develop while reading, listening and playing.

The colorful and cheerful environment, child-friendly equipment, enticing toys and games at PKC help a child to listen and discover, imagine and create. At PKC a child also experiences the love and warmth of teachers who believe that each child is special and take interest in each child's mental, physical and emotional growth.

It is a known fact that maximum learning happens during the early years of a child's life where her/his mind is open to new ideas. So, it is essential to hone the intellectual, physical, emotional, linguistic, social and moral skills that will stand a kid in good stead for the rest of her/his life. At PKC we understand this and therefore make sure that we make no compromise when it comes to imparting quality education.

Prerana's mission is to work for development and improvement of women, children, old aged and handicapped by, taking care of them, educating them, training them and providing skills to them so that they are independent, capable and self sustained. It aims to create an independent resource pool which can be used as facilities like children's and elder's home away from home and market place for household product made by women.

Here is what a day at PKC is all about

A world of learning and doing, friends and fun, games and activities - that's PKC for your child. A typical day at PKC packs in the right amount of learning with fun in a very creative and interesting way.

Membership

There are three types of membership i.e. General, Honorary and lifetime. The general membership of the organisation is granted by the executive committee or members after filling the membership form and paying the membership fee denoted by the organisation if all the eligibility criteria are fulfilled. General members meet every year to discuss the ongoing activities, future activities to be done, funds, reviewing the policies and programs, discuss about the income and expenditure of the fiscal year etc of the organisation.

A child's second home

It is very important that a child feels at home in a pre-school. At PKC, while maintaining the discipline of a school, we have also ensured that the ambience and the teachers make the child comfortable. The child learns in a safe and secure environment, in rooms that are cheerful and fun to be in. This enables the child to express her/himself and her/his creativity freely. As a result, s/he develops skills easily and inculcates them for a lifetime.

KIDS' COURTYARD

At Prerana we have always believed in the importance of the values learnt within the families. In this way, our long-term objective is to reproduce the structure of the Nepali families in our organization, putting together the elderly and handicapped care, the empowerment of women, and the education of children.

However, as this is a big project, we have to start step by step. Our short-term priority is to build a familiar environment for children; a place where they can feel at home while they develop themselves both physically and mentally, as well as emotionally.

Therefore, children from 9 months to 5 years are welcome to our place, where they can learn from professional teachers and other staff experienced in children care. Our child friendly environment is a great opportunity for them to start performing the daily activities by themselves, such as eating, incorporating hygienic routines and relating with others.

They follow a daily schedule from 9 am to 5 pm, when they attend lessons depending on their level and age. Children from 9months to 18 months play in our playroom under the tuition of our staff members. Those from 18months to 2.5 years are members of the Play Group, and they attend lessons in their own classroom, based on the idea of "learning by playing". We believe that children must be an active part of their own learning process, and they should enjoy it as much as possible.

The elder ones, those from 2.5 to 3.5 years, are the Nursery Group, beyond 3.5 years is LKG Group and they attend lessons in the nursery classroom. They learn by doing things themselves, with the orientation of our well experienced teachers. This educational system provides them with the tools to learn more quickly and to be able to retain things forever.

Both the Play Group and the Nursery Group combine classroom lessons with practice lessons in our Lab Room. This room is divided into different sections, such as sensorial, practical life exercises, culture, language and mathematics. Each section has specific material on the topic, with which children can put in practice the things they learn.

After their learning hours, they have free playtime in our playroom and in our outdoor facilities, like our terrace and our ground. We provide them with open space games, such as slides and swings, and with various educative games in our indoor room.

During playtime, they learn rhythms and songs and listen to stories read by the teachers. We consider that harmonizing learning and playing is essential because that way our children will grow happier.

As a complement to mental upbringing, we trust in the importance of having a balanced diet, and in consequence we provide our children with three light meals per day. The weekly menu is established according to our traditional customs and quality of the products, and it is adjusted to children's health conditions when needed. Meals are served in our dining room, a space attached to the kitchen, which allows children to share the cooking and cleaning process.

When we began, five years ago, we started running the kindergarten with only a few children. Fortunately, we have been growing constantly and we are really happy to have reached the number over forty children who enjoy and learn with us every day.
